The ITS palette

The UNC ITS color palette builds upon the University color palette, emphasizing colors associated with technology as well as those that evoke energy. All ITS communications and materials should utilize this palette to maintain brand consistency. The primary palette should be incorporated into the majority of a design, whereas the secondary and tertiary palettes should be used as accents.

When in doubt, it is always acceptable to default to the University guidelines for colors and design.

Primary palette

Carolina Blue should be prominent in every design (substitute Web Carolina Blue in digital documents).

Design tip: Navy can be considered a ‘neutral’ color when used as a background, allowing Carolina Blue to pop against the dark background.

CAROLINA BLUE
PMS 542
CMYK 60, 19, 1, 4
Use Web Carolina Blue Hex and RGB values.

NAVY
PMS 2767
CMYK 100, 90, 10, 77
Hex #13294B
RGB 19, 41, 75

Digital Accessibility: colors for use in digital media

ITS adheres to the University’s Digital Accessibility Policy. Web Carolina Blue must be used in place of Carolina Blue in digital documents to support accessibility. Hyperlink Blue should not be used as part of the design palette other than for links.

All digital media must pass WCAG 2.0, Level AA standards. Use the WebAIM Color Contrast Checker to test the color contrast of your color combinations. For more information on digital accessibility, visit the UNC Branding Guide for Websites.

Only use Web Carolina Blue with font sizes larger than 24 px (18pt) or 19 px and bold (14pt). Recommended font sizes are based on Web Carolina Blue over a white background. Hyperlink Blue should be used only on a white background.

WEB CAROLINA BLUE
Hex #4B9CD3
RGB 75, 156, 211

HYPERLINK BLUE
Hex #007FAE
RGB 0, 127, 174
Use on a white background only.

Secondary palette

Use for accents only (secondary palettes should not dominate a design). Incorporate Carolina Blue with these shades of teal to emphasize the technology-focused theme of the ITS brand.

TILE TEAL

PMS 7466
CMYK 97, 0, 30, 0
Hex #00A5AD
RGB 0, 165, 173

TECH TEAL

PMS 637
CMYK 58, 1, 6, 0
Hex #55C5E5
RGB 85, 197, 229

Tertiary palette

Use sparingly as accents, think “less is more.” These bright colors create energy in a design, help move the eye around a page, and draw attention to important elements. They can add a sense of casual playfulness, so use them in appropriate contexts.

Note: Tech Teal and Energy Drink Orange are PMS colors added to the palette by ITS to enhance our brand.
